Exclamation The Comic Box #55 AND 'Special Missions' #6 !!!

Welcome to The Comic Box. This is a discussion thread for the GI Joe comics. We start at Marvel’s #1 and move thru the series every week. It’s a chance to give your thoughts, opinions and remarks about the comic in question.


#55. Unmaskings

~Short Summary~
In Sierra Gordo, Stalker leads a rescue of Snake-Eyes. As they are freeing him Stalker is shot. Snake-Eyes elects to cover the team as they evacuate him, he doesn't return with the team. Cobra Commander and Destro escape from the destroyed Pit. Then using their disguises make there way across New York. A policeman recognizes Cobra Commander and tells him his son Billy is alive.

~Notes of Interest~
Grunt retires from GI Joe.
Unveiling of the Cobra Consult Building to be built in New York City.
Cobra Commander & Destro unmasked for the first time. Destro's first time seeing the Commander's face.
Billy, Cobra Commander's son, is still alive.

#6. Envasion


~Short Summary~
LOCATION: Borovia
Outback must hide in the sewer, steal clothing, and buy a truck, out smart a Colonel Ratnikov all in order to escape from Borovia. In order to make sure that Stalker, Quick Kick and Snow Job, who were left behind, aren't forgotten in the Gulag prison.

~Notes of Interest~
The individual Special Mission issues influence on the main series fluctuates from being a completely separate story to having a minor influence or is a direct continuation from the regular Marvel series.
This issue takes place directly after the regular series issue #61.
See Outback's return to the Pit in the regular series issue #63.
See final rescue of Stalker, Quick Kick and Snow Job in the regular series issue #66.

The main thing I remember about these two issues is the great covers they both had. Issue #55 kept the main story line rolling along nicely, and SM #6 was the first in the series to tie in directly with the main story. I didn't really enjoy the Borovia story that much, so this was not one of my favourite Special Missions issues.

Interesting. I did like the Borovia line a bit, and I liked Outback outwitting the Borovian so he received his due without Outback pulling the trigger on him, thus preserving his integrity.

Unmaskings was a tease, since they diguised themselves in other types of disguises. But the cover was a quite a tease.

I enjoyed #55. I liked the idea of how CC and Destro had to get other disguises and stuff. I like the route these two were taking because in a few issues, CC tries to retire. That made him very human to me and while it ushered in a new CC, I just liked the feel of the story.
