I can't believe nobody has said "Apocalypse Now" yet. One of the very best movies ever, so definitely one of the best war movies ever. Granted, it's not about heroism or glorification of warfare, so perhaps that's the reason it didn't come to mind.
Also, "The Eagle Has Landed" and "Battle of the River Plate".
"The Guns of Navarone"
"Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo"
"Sahara"
"Sink the Bismark"
"The Longest Day"
"Midway"
"Tora, Tora, Tora"
"Platoon"
"All Quiet on the Western Front"
"The Great Escape"
"The Bridge on the River Kwai"
"Sergeant York"
"The Empire of the Sun"
"Battle of the Bulge"
Battle Of The Bulge
Battleground
The Dirty Dozen
The Big Red One
The Patriot
Saving Private Ryan
Bridge Over the River Kwai
Tora Tora Tora
The Longest Day
Black Hawk Down
Kelly's Heroes
Sahara (The original with Bogie)
Star Wars
The Great Escape
1941
Red Dawn

The Beast of War "During the war in Afghanistan a Soviet tank crew commanded by a tyrannical officer find themselves lost and in a struggle against a band of Mujahadeen guerrillas in the mountains."
Great movies!
I can attest, this one is truly gritty. I think watching this should be a pre-requisite before deciding on heading to Afghanistan. That movie show the home court advantage is definitely in play. Cold war 80's well done.
