Pfeh, speak for yourself. I'll take Snake-Eyes over Agent Mary Sue, erm I mean Helix, any damn day of the week. |
But to intro new characters (in which they kinda did in the movie, albeit, revamped them) is a crap shoot. I think a lot of the problem with new characters is that in written form, they can be awesome (cept of Hard Drive and Link Talbot). It's their execution that sucks rocks.
Let's be honest here. The 25A/MOdernAge/ROC figures are here. They provide better sculpting and some way out there designs. For the most part, there execution has been quite good. BUT take the latter o-ring days and while good characters were created, their execution as a plastic figure has been iffy. We can cite CHARACTERS like Bombstrike, Plague, Crosshair and Blackout have been awesome. Their figures range from not-so-hott to ok (by today's standards). C'mon, Crosshair can barely hold a gun and it takes some major manipulation and a lot of patience to make him work. Imagine him with current sculpting. Those wrists can work wonders for him. (give him a better head sculpt too) Blackout? Dude was cross-eyed and suffered arm articulation. Plague still has potential. Bombstrike... Errrrr, give her the modern fix and man... Just fix that pathetic t-shirt!!! We can site losers like Hard Drive, Link Talbot, Coil Crusher, anything action attack... The t-crotch had some great designs but the lack of proper waist and leg articulation makes them a joke. So as for the original topic. I'm guessing the figure is faithful (which doesn't often happen) and he has great articulation. Perhaps look PAST the character and see the toy. It is entirely possible that the articulation recipe for Mr Eyes is a prototype of upcoming figures. Certainly, a lot of what VvV and DTC did were ideas for the 25A. (ball neck joints, swivel wrists, etc) |
I have no hate for guys like Crosshair and Widescope and the Stall family.
The problem is, a lot of new characters tend to be overpowered. Just look at Big Brawler and Sure Fire from the Real American Hero Collection. One hybridizes Outback, Snake-Eyes all in an 80s action star loose cannon package, which is awful. The other mixes Chuckles, Shockwave and Quick Kick with some Hollywood FBI Hero thrown in. They're both awful, awful characters. Wreckage, likewise, is able to WRITE ON PEOPLE'S HELMETS AND BACKS WITHOUT THEM NOTICING. Helix is the worst offender of all. She can learn ANYTHING just by seeing it performed, she can instantly analyze situations, recognize weapons and their capacity, predict enemy moves and everything, everything, comes easy to her. Say what you will about Snake-Eyes, it took him some epic hard work and a lot of personal tragedies for him to become what he is today. Helix, on the other hand, is the Mary Sue of all Mary Sues to whom everything comes easily. And yeah, some people will say "Well then I'll just ignore the filecard/comic/whatever" and do my own thing! To them I say: Quit hating on Snake-Eyes and do the same with him, then. As for the City Strike figure, I bought the Rescue Mission version and wasn't very impressed. He can't hold his gun well, there is no way he can draw his sword realistically, posing his legs always knocks his belt out of the way and he's just too bulky for my liking in general. I much prefer the first ROC Snake-Eyes, provided you give him a Paris Pursuit SE head first. |
I don't think joes have had a decent new character since the original ARAH days (around 1990, but a few scattered in the years after, Heavy Duty was good as he was written back then for instance). I applaud hasbro for some efforts this year (Night adder, ect) but none of them stood out.
The JvC-VvV new characters all suffered from a lack of believablity and individualism. Hard Drive was there to replace Mainframe, Faces was there to replace chuckles ect. While updates are good, the line needed some freshness rather than the same character with a different name. Again Night adder at least had a specialty not used for cobra yet (Although with it he seemed a bit of a take off of croc master, the mask didn't help either). Helix was vastly overpowered and as such was a joke of herself. The Big Brawler of the new milenium (Just a gothy chick is all). The ARAH collector edition character not only suffered from fill in syndrome, they used old molds that were pretty identifable with thier orginals (Big Brawler-Outback, Roablock was almost paited the exactly same way and renamed Doublle Blast for no real apparent reason). I think the last new character I felt anything besides laughter for was Bulletproof in 1993 (guessing I don't feel like checking joeindes or yo joe right now and I do tend to mix up 90-94 figures and release dates). But on that same token I am SICK to death of seeing the same characters over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over to the point of nausium. Sanke Eyes is one of the main offenders (or offended depending on your POV). I intend to stay away from such characters unless they are something unique, even though I caved to the $5 sale for CS SE, I don't feel he falls into that catagory. |
