Comic question
I was not into comics when I was younger, so I never read the original run. I have about a half dozen or so now that I have picked up, and I really enjoy them. I don't collect comics, so I don't want the expense of a complete set. I thought I heard something about a compilation set in like graphic novel form. Is this true, or am I mistaken? If so where can I get a set? I know absolutely nothing about comic books so help in stearing me in the right direction would be appreciated, thanks, Dave

A few years ago, Marvel Comics reprinted the first 50 issues of their original run as five trade paperback compilations, but they're long out of print and I think they command pretty hefty prices on the aftermarket.
However, IDW Publishing, who just secured the license, will be reprinting the Marvel series starting next year. It looks like it'll be the same format as Marvel was doing -- ten issues per volume. I assume they're doing it this way so as not to rile up those of us who bought those first five volumes and don't want to buy them again! The first two volumes are available here and here. They even use the same J. Scott Campbell cover art as the Marvel ones! I just hope they realize and understand that sales may not be fantastic for the first five volumes since many fans already have the Marvel versions. I'm sure there will be a spike after the first five, when they start reprinting material that Marvel never got to. Plus, most fans tend to consider the 50s, 60s, and 70s the highlights of the entire series so I would expect sales for a 6th, 7th, and 8th volume at the very least to be pretty good, so I hope IDW will take all of this into consideration as they put this line out!

i was into them and actually gi joe was the first comic i ever read. it was the one where destro and CC took snake eyes mask off. at the time i thought it was ok, but didnt want any more because it was no fun. everyone spoke the same with no different attitudes. i actually have them all now on a disc and some in real form. i read them like 3 years ago. the first 56 or so issues were good, never great because of no character distinction, but after that i found a hatred for hama. anyway, i wanted to say to anyone, if you havent read them, do not read above 56 or so. its truly like sunbow to dic in the comic world.

I'd say go thru the Cobra War then give up. that should be upwards of #70.

I dunno, I like the whole run... The "Snake-Eyes Trilogy" in the 90s is good... The battle of Behnzeen is pretty interesting, mirroring the then-current first Gulf War... And I love "Destro: Search and Destroy" from 116-118. There's even some good stuff in the 120s-130s, in my opinion. Duke leading the defense of the Pit, for example, and the storyline where Hawk and a group of Joes are trapped in Borovia and Hawk gets shot. I even like "Triptych" and "Diptych" because even though they feature both the Eco Warriors and Ninja Force (and green Firefly!), the storytelling mechanism is pretty neat (plus I've made no secret of the fact that Slice is one of my favorite Cobras).
Once it becomes "G.I. Joe Starring Snake-Eyes and Ninja Force," it's not so great. The Star Brigade story, while out of place in a G.I. Joe comic, was nonetheless entertaining -- Larry Hama thought of "Armageddon" before Hollywood did!
