Gung Ho
Mega Marines Commander

1993 was a wild time for G.I. Joe. The Battle Corps series was replacing the original G.I. Joe line. Ninja Force was still running full steam and Star Brigade was just rolling out on the launch pad. At that time another team of Joe's and Cobras were preparing for battle. The Mega Marines... Figures wearing brightly colored battle suits and spring action rocket launchers. The main gimmick for them was the play do that was included with every figure. You molded bio armor to the figures themselves and even the tips of the missiles then tore pieces off like battle damage. My 13 year old self ate this up! Not the play do mind you the gimmickyness of the figures. In addition the Mega Marines put out a vehicle which was the only piece of this line to appear in the Marvel comics and some of the narliest monsters ever to be conjured up by Hasbro. The Mega Monsters!!!

Its no surprise Gung Ho was selected to command the G.I. Joe Mega Marine forces, who better then one of the roughest toughest Marines of them all. I also tend to believe the 1993 Leatherneck volunteers to go out on missions with them as well. Hasbro was also experimenting with paint apps at that time so many of the figures had paint marbleization on there uniforms. The Mega Marine Gung Ho was one such figure. Gung Ho included a helmet, launcher, two missiles, stand, sub machine gun, machine gun, shotgun, machete, armor mold and can of play do. While I picked my Gung Ho up at a local comic shop I am missing most of the parts he was included with. He is one of my favorite Mega Marines and I prefer this one over the bare chested versions any day. Gung Ho is also marked with the number 1 on his armor this was only done with the Joe Mega Marines as a unit marker.

Blast Off
Flame Thrower

Blast Off is the Mega Marines Flame Thrower specialist and former firefighter. Apparently it was discovered that Mega Monsters are afraid of fire (Hmmm somebody must have been taking notes while watching Aliens), so Gung Ho ordered Blast Off to lite those freaks up. Blast Off has a number 2 on his uniform and includes launcher, two missiles, stand, sub machine gun, knife, BFG type weapon, helmet, armor mold and can of play do. Blast Off was one of several Mega Marines that I actually let use the spring action launcher.

My Blast-Off uses Marauderinc's (Aliens) Flame Thrower!

I might have to consider that option too along with the marauder pulse rifle.

Clutch
Monster Blaster A.P.C. Driver

Clutch once a member of the original Joe team is now a member of the Mega Marines and the official of the Monster Blaster the Mega Marines primary mode of transportation. Now cleanly shaven Clutch sports a bright orange and yellow outfit. Although not included with the vehicle Clutch was packaged along with the rest of his team with a #3 stamped on his uniform. Clutch includes the same weapons as Gung Ho with a yellow launcher can of play do and armor mold.

Mirage
Bio-Artillery Expert

Your guess is as good as mine on what a Bio-Artillery Expert is exactly? But it sounds awesome... Several of the Joe's in 1993 were given names taken from another line of action figures COPS. These giant 6" Joe's had there own cartoon series in the late 80s and were basically a futuristic crime fighting force. Several of the figures mostly DEF were given those names Mace, Long Arm, Bullet Proof. Mirage was another of my favorite Mega Marines back in the day and one of the first I bought. While Gung Ho commanded, Clutch drove the Monster Blaster, Blast Off is the fire expert, Mirage fired rocket launchers and explosives. His suit gave him enhanced speed and strength in the arms and legs to absorb the shock at launching a warhead at a slobbering Mega Monster. Mirage has the same weapons as Blast Off only in blue and green.

I don't own any of these figures, and I am curious to see exactly how the moulded 'bio-armour' actually looked on the figure. I've never actually seen a photo of what it looks like. I'm glad you had fun with yours!

Cyber-Viper
Cybernetic Officers

The Cyber-Vipers are basically the operations specialists for the Mega-Monsters they are half man half machine all evil. The Cyber-Vipers did appear in the Marvel comic run and mostly manned the Cobra Detonator tanks. The Cyber-Viper includes armor mold, can of play do, spring action launcher, two missiles, battle stand, Incinerator's flame thrower, Rock Viper's sniper rifle, Voltar's assault rifle and Toxo-viper's gun. I remember growing up Terminator II was still hot in theaters and this guy was from this dystopian future who traveled back in time to eliminate certain members of the Joe team.

Mega-Vipers
Mega-Monster Trainers

Mega-Vipers were cool sculpt wise and training (who else is gonna keep those Mega-Monsters under control) but there paint apps were awful... This has got to be the worse painted Cobra from 82-94. I don't know how wearing bright neon yellow and pink is going to help sneaking up on G.I. Joe or teaching there Mega-Monster pets to fetch a stick. If you want a really good repainted version of Mega-Viper check out the 2003 Joe Con Swamp-Viper. Mega-Viper comes with the same weapons as Cyber-Viper just in worse bright neon colors. I really dig that hot pink mini gun rocket launcher he comes with ;)

Marty,
If I can find some play do for real cheap I can show you on here. Basically you place two small pieces of play do on each side of the armor mold. Clamp the mold around the figure and remove the mold. Remove any access play do. You will now have a nice Bio Armor cast around the figure. Works the same on the tips of the missiles too.

Bio-Viper

By far my favorite Mega-Marine figure and possibly my favorite in the 90s the Bio-Viper. Genetically enhanced soldiers created by Dr. Mindbender. I guess I should've mentioned at the beginning, Mindbender was behind the Mega-Monster research. Instead of combining the DNA of histories greatest leaders the Bio-Vipers have been combined with the oceans deadliest predators. Once former Cobra Eels who were "volunteered" Mindbender injected them with the DNA of great whites, giant squid and moray eel. They are also cybernetically enhanced in order for Mindbender to "control" some what. The Bio-Viper is almost twice as big as a regular G.I. Joe and has most of the articulation in the arms. The legs and head do turn. The action feature is a fin on the back that when press down grabs and holds figures in its deadly giant squid tentacles. Another gimmick standard with each Mega-Monster is "Monster Smell" a stinky musk sprayed on the plastic of each action figure. Finally the Bio-Viper includes a spring action weapon that fires a missile or torpedo. It was also the only Mega-Marine not to include play do.

Monstro-Viper

Monstro-Viper's are perhaps the most terrifying Joe figure ever to come out. They were big, nasty, and they had a "Monster Smell". They kinda remind me of the Fatal Fluffies seen in the Pyramid of Darkness mini series. The Monstro-Vipers are the land based cousins of the Bio-Vipers. They were once Range Vipers who Cobra Commander volunteered for Dr. Mindbenders genetic experiments. Using the DNA of grizzlies, rabid werewolves and bigfoot (yes apparently werewolves and bigfoot do exist), the Monstro-Vipers were created. The Monstro-Viper had a really disgusting gimmick of creating "gut bombs" out of its excriments. A play do mold was built right into the belly of this beast and when play do is mashed inside the mold it creates a gut bomb. The right hand is a action lever that tosses the gut bombs at Mega-Marines and other victims. Aside from its nasty action feature the Monstro-Viper includes a spike ball and chain and laser rifle.

Monster Blaster A.P.C.

The Monster Blaster was the official tactical transport of the Mega-Marines it stored over 20 figures inside and around the vehicle. The Monster Blaster also has the distinct pleasure being in the Marvel Comic run during the early 90s. It was seen in several panels during military exercises conducted by Gen. Hawk. However aside from the Monster Blaster and Cyber-Viper no other Mega-Marines or Monsters were featured in the comic. The Monster Blaster had all sorts of bells and whisles, from the lock and load missile launcher to the elevating hatch for storing six Joe's. The vehicle features opening hatch for the driver, a swivel turret for the gunner and two pivoting rear gunners stations in back. The Monster Blaster is the ultimate weapon for fighting genetically engineered monsters.

I would love to see the molded bio armor in action! That’s such a sweet concept! I remember the first time I found out about play doh was when my brother brought home the play doh factory. It was really cool.

Hmmm, gung ho looks so different without his exposed chest. He almost looks like dr. mindbender. The helmet looks very cool for a 90s helmet. Sorry you are missing most of the accessories. Sorry if ya don’t mind me asking but I’m having a hard time finding the #1 on gung ho’s armor. Thanks.

Blast off looks pretty badass even with those 90s bright neon colors. You know when you’re a kid, you don’t mind those neon psychedelic colors but as an adult, I can’t help feeling dizzy from all the brightness lol! Blast off sure is packing a lot of heat! Helmet even though orange looks cool. I always liked those missile launchers. Again, I’d love to see the play doh armor and missiles in action!

I’m not digging the color scheme on clutch. It just looks dry and boring. And the green doesn’t make sense with the orange and yellow and black. Yikes, it looks like a color disaster. The weapons are cool. How come blast off only came with one missile and clutch came with two? That’s cool that the joe figures had machetes back then.

Mirage was a cool o-ring figure. I had it in another paint job. The visor was my favorite part. The armor especially on the legs and feet was very awesome. Nice that he came with a lot of big guns. And that baby blue paint looks great. For the third time, I really hope you update this mega marines review with pictures of the play doh armor and missiles.

The cyber vipers look badass even with all that splash of colors that look straight out of a salad! Cyber vipers look futuristic and somewhat post apocalyptic. It would be terrific to see them in more realistic colors. The mask/visor looks cool, I really love the single shoulder pad sticking out, and the gray gun looks interesting. I also like how his legs are different colors and styles. I like how he has one machine hand and one human hand. Tons of weapons. That’s what I loved about the 90s figures. And of course the missile launchers. “missile really shoots!”

Mega vipers, you know the color scheme doesn’t really bother me. Heck, for me the cyber viper colors and clutch colors are worse but that’s just my opinion. I really like the oval circular shape of the mega viper visor. For me, the colors kind of work. I like the way the green-yellow and pink is distributed throughout the body.

Bio-Viper looks massive and bloody awesome. The tentacles action feature sounds freaking cool. The monster smell, not so much. Really like the scales detail on the skin and the color scheme. The sculpting on the head make the eyes look fierce and angry. Bio viper would make an excellent army builder!

Where’s the GUT BOMB from the monstro viper??? I really want to see that excrement bomb! Sounds hilarious. Reminds me of the giant mutated hamster from the movie, The Nutty Professor. That giant hamster shoots its poop like missiles! The monstro viper does look terrifying. I like that it has tufts of fur spread and dispersed throughout its body. The face and eyes look scary. The mace club is awesome. Another excellent army builder. Say hello to the sasquatch monster!

I had the monster blaster. I remember my mother getting it for me at toysrus. I was always more into vehicles than figures. Too bad I had no figures to use with my monster blaster. It was a great vehicle though. Lots of space and tons of weapons. That canopy for the driver was awesome and sleek looking. The foot pegs on the sides and back were cool. The missile launcher mechanism was a lot of fun though you have to wonder just how the figures reloaded the missile launcher lol!

The #1 is on the black dot on Gung Ho's armor. I actually found all his gear recently.

Blast off and Mirage are missing there missiles and knives.

I'll see what I can do about finding some play do to make there bio armor and gut bombs.

I would love to have troop built these back in the 90s truth is they were hard to find and expensive for a kid with a lawn mowing job on the weekends. It is a lot easier today to find these figures than back then. Usually if I saw them hanging on the shelf I would grab them up. I remember seeing the mega monsters in stores once then they were gone.
