Artwork WIP
Drawing is a hobby of mine, one I don't do much. I'm still working out the artstyle and this pin-up is a WIP. This is also not the whole image. Some of you might remember a comic project I was doing a for a friend tentatively called "Samurai Wars". There's still a lot of work to be done on it.
This is Ryo Matusmoto. A bad guy. I goofed on his weapons. This was the original concept for his weapon where'd he swing this blade around (a bit like Kratos, I suppose) but talking to people, the weapon wouldn't work well. (I was also thinking like that claw dude from Ninja Scroll.) Technically, there's supposed to be a handle on the other end so he can make it a short halberd or he can surprise the enemy and extend it when 'thrown' right.
The comic looks, for the most part, NOTHING like this. This is more... COLORFUL than the comic which is mainly grayscale.
Enjoi.

Ok, I finished it up. I'm horrible at doing colored backgrounds and tend to skimp out on them. But hey, this works for me. I have stuff all over my walls so when I actually DRAW Samurai Warriors, all the reference material is actually up.
My style for the actual story is more like this...

Or this, which is the 1st pin-up I did some time ago. I really like the style myself and very different than most of the stuff out there now.

IIRC, there are 6-7 good guys and 4 bad guys. BUT the bad guys command legions of demons and undead... BUT... The good guy side... it's remotely... Power Ranger-ish? Each person has elemental powers and they can summon 'gods' for the most part. You really got know the Final Fantasy universe to understand that one. Like that one dude standing over the fallen ninja. That's Akira Sugiyama (1st character I created). He's been granted the powers of "Ifrit". Unlike the others, he can turn into a fire demon but can summon fire powers. The 1st issue sees a lot of him.
The 2nd picture of the guy in the long coat/robe... That's the leader of the posse. At that point, you have to be familiar with Seven Samurai. This guy is a master with the blade but doesn't play on it much. That is Kodai Isaaru and he was incredibly hard to design. My first designs I threw out. I'm cool with how he is now.
That was the 2nd character I designed. Mori Tanaka.

Just for the fun of it... He's a list of characters... And some insighter stuff!
Good
Akira Sugiyama. Akira = character from Akira anime. Sugiyama = Main character from the Japanese flick SHALL WE DANCE which came out before the crapola Richard Gere/Jennifer Lopez Americanized version.
Mori Tanaka. Based loosely on a character from 7 Samurai. In the movie, there was a swordsman who can take down an opponent in one strike. Tanaka has 3 large demon horns on his gauntlet. He was granted the powers of ice from the demon he slayed.
Sato Kasai. Sato = Bruce Sato from Mask. Kasai = Lester Kasai, 80s pro skater. He's the powerhouse. His powers are based in the Sun.
Yuni Harada. Yuni = What Rikku calls Yuna in FFX and FFX-2. Harada = Mike Harada was a skater at my middle school. Yuni is a female ninja... She has the powers of the Moon (or darkness, but not in that evil way).
Kodai Isaaru. Kodai = Known as Derek Wildstar in the Americanized Star Blazers. Kodai was the Japanese original. Isaaru = the summoner who couldn't finish the journey in FFX. He too is an excellent swordsman but more reserved. From those who remember 7 Samurai, there was a swordsman who could take down a person in 1 strike. THIS was the stance he struck before taking out his challenger!
Domu Takeshi. Forgot where I got Domu from. Takeshi = A manager at Daiso. He has the power of THunder/Lightening. He was a late addition. Based on Zhao Yun from the Dynasty Warriors video game series. I can't seem to find a file on him in my computer tho I must have one since I made copies of him!
BAD
Nazo Akashima. I don't remember where I got the name from. Akashima might be from Warriors Orochi. He is based roughly on Cao Cao from the Dynasty Warriors series. Yet, he kind of looks like an evil Riker from ST:TNG!
Ro. This is a demon who took a human host and well, he's pretty... out there? He has mad powers, let's just put it that way.
Ryo Matsumoto. Matsumoto = My main competitor when I swam back in the day was a guy named Chris Matsumoto. This guy is sleek, fast and well, based on the toad duder with the chain claw from Ninja Scroll. Or at least, in terms of part of the weapon and how he moves.
Yukio. Forgot where this name came from. I may have been watching Last Samurai or Advent Children and just pulled names! She's a lightening fast swordsman who has her own agenda.

Sounds like some cool characters and that you have put a lot of tought into them.
Allthough I commend your honesty I would suggest that you did not tell people who you based the characters on, when you mix and match as much as you do its original characters anyway. Also I had never heard of ninty percent of the characters you spoke of in your post.
And the last picture of the guy in the longcoat is awasome.
