Just a thought (Inspired by an Outrider pic)
So I know the site is for fun, inspiration, and making friends (heck I know I've done all three) but I was wondering based on a reply Loose Canon made to an Outrider pic, "Is there a shot of the year award?" Has there ever been Joedios award? Would anyone be interested? Think of the categories: Best overall, most improved, best use of lighting, etc. (inspired by the JCAs). I think something like that could really pump people up. If no one's down that's fine of course. I'm not seeing it as a competition but rather a chance for Joedios members to express their gratitude toward one another.
Just a suggestion.

I applaud the thought.......and completely see your positions as nothing short of respect........but I'm going to go with a 'no' for that.
Simply put, singling out people for one thing or the other (as altruistic as it may be), will, in my personal opinion, only serve to hurt other members who feel that they have done more, come farther, etc., etc., etc.
If you and a group of others wants to pursue it, then go ahead, by all means.........but I'm going to abstain from any part in it.
That's my opinion, and I'm the only one I'm qualified to speak for........

Thank you for your honesty and I can completely see and understand your point of view. Like I said no biggie if it's a no, just a thought.

Great idea...
It's a great idea, if done properly.. but I'm going to go with my instincts here.
I agree here with G.S, and alot like her I'm staying waaay out of this.

This idea was thrown around awhile back and GS pretty much said it all. I'd love to do an awards thang. I even considered grabbing 3rd party people but I feel that more people would get burned than praised.

I think this could be a good thing to inspire members, and encourage commitment. I don't really see why competition has to be a dirty word...
What I would suggest is, instead of doing a thread or something for giving awards right NOW, we basically introduce the competition so that the first awards will be for the best of 2008 (seems like the ideal time to start something like that going).
In a year's time, each member can submit their own entry for each category they want to try for (nothing to stop anyone from asking around to get others' opinions on what they feel their best submissions would be) and then once each entrant is in we can all have our say to decide the winner for each category. It doesn't have to be a straight poll thread, so no anonymous voting (making it harder for dishonesty) and anyone being insulting or flaming (which I'd doubt would happen anyway) would be subject to the usual site codes of conduct anyway.
I dunno about actual prizes but there'd at least be prestige -- winners could put it in their signature or that bit under their username (eg my "Wasss once a man..."). If anyone wanted to arrange physical prizes then that'd need a bit more planning and MAYBE would bring out worse sides of people (I'll agree, greed can do nasty things) but if we're doing it for its own sake, how is it going to be doing anything but inspiring people to be as imaginative, creative and attentive as possible when coming up with pics to post so that they might then want to put them forward in a showcase of the best that our community is capable of? The winners get some recognition for the work they'll have put in and everyone else has something to aim for in readiness for the next awards...!

Maybe you could come up with a bunch of categories instead of having just one winner.

i Think The Thought Is In Good Intention.... "but".... I See This Going Badly. We All Have Friends And We Are All Adults. Saying That Like Me Some Are Very Competitive And In The Proccess Things Can Be Said Or Done That May Hurt Others Feelings Or Friendships. After All It Would Be In Essence A Competition Right ?

I think this idea is well-meaning,but it would end badly.
