The Comic Box #28!!!
Welcome to The Comic Box. This is a discussion thread for the GI Joe comics. We start at Marvel’s #1 and move thru the series every Wednesday. It’s a chance to give your thoughts, opinions and remarks about the comic in question.
#28. Swampfire!
~Short Summary~
The Joes go after Cobra Commander in Zartan's swamp, and get into a fight with robotic Cobras.
~Notes of Interest~
First appearance of the W.H.A.L.E. and the Rattler. Gets a little far-fetched, but still enjoyable.

I loved this one as a kid-all ACTION! And it featured 3 of my favorite vehicles,MOBAT,the Rattlers, and the Killer WHALE!
But WTF was up with those robot Cobras?
Nice art by longtime Marvel penciler Marie Severin.

Long time cry of Marvel Joe comic purists: "IT WAS REALISTIC!"
Issue 3...big honking robot.
Issue 28...Zartan inexplicably has a robot army hidden under the swamps. (with weapons that inexplicably work despite submergence in filthy water).
(And those were before Hasbro invented BATS!)
By the way, that we never got a comic pack set with Robot Cobra Trooper and Robot Cobra Hiss Driver is a !@%%^@ tragedy. That would've ruled.
Almost foreshadowing, Firefly tries to control the robot army....many issues and a lime green outfit later he has a BAT army.
Deep Six proves he's not a jerk...again.
Wild Weasel get's in Rattler for the first time in a comic...only to chaffuer C.C. home. Bummer. (Baroness had rattlers shipped to Florida, but not troopers?)
The bit with the Sheriff and his deputy...corny...were they supposed to Beauford T Justice & son or Laurel and Hardy?
Nice artwork, though in one panel hooded Cobra Commander looks exactly like a Pac Man ghost.
Score: 7/10

Hmmmm, must admit this is not one of my favourite issues, the robots spoiled it somewhat. I suppose we were lucky their were so few rocks amongst the gems, at least until the later issues anyway.
