Exclamation The Comic Box #26!!!

Welcome to The Comic Box. This is a discussion thread for the GI Joe comics. We start at Marvel’s #1 and move thru the series every Wednesday. It’s a chance to give your thoughts, opinions and remarks about the comic in question.

#26. Snake-Eyes: The Origin

~Short Summary~
Part one of a two-part look into Snake-Eyes' background, and the connection between him and Storm Shadow. It is believed that Storm Shadow killed his own uncle from his ninja clan, which Snake-Eyes had also joined.

~Notes of Interest~
Destro quotes Kwinn, the Eskimo on the first page, "A man who whips his dog will pull his own sled some day." Tripwire's clumsiness is highlighted with numerous falls and trips. Snake-Eyes' background is described and his connection with Storm Shadow is explained. It is revealed that Snake-Eyes lost his entire family in a car accident. Many ninja techniques and weapons are shown during Snake-Eyes training. The finisher was credited as Steve Leialoha. Leialoha was also the file name of Torpedo. Coincidence? It's the second issue drawn by Larry Hama, the Joe comics writer.

Snake-Eyes the Origin......another one of my favorites.Supposedly ALL the clues to Snakes' past are on this cover, but I can't find them all....

I love the Vietnam connection, the Ninja training segment, and the fact that Snake-Eyes cares so much for Storm Shadow that he would stand aside from something great,ie inheriting the ninja "family business" rather than take it away from his friend.

A lot of good stuff here,Larry Hama and Steve Leialoha were excellent with faces. The expression on Snakes when Hawk tells him his family was killed in a car accident." He looked like he'd already seen it."

This issue is a great example of Hama giving us a piece of the puzzle, but not too much-gotta keep us interested!

Thumbs up

Once Again an AWESOME ISSUE from Hama!!! It was awesome to find out the past history of Snake-eyes!!! I just wish Hama who have done that more with other certain characters. Also loved the continuation of the story with Zartan & co.

Shhhh! Don't remind people that Destro apparently knew Kwinn...word gets around and Devil's Due might turn it into a convaluted 4 issue mini-series. THE KWINN CHRONICLES

I suppose Snake-Eyes' origin was interesting back then, when the character was. Toooooo long to remember. I like Soft Master easily disarming foolish gun-totting youths...(that was this issue?)

Cobra's high command mucking about a swamp, nary a trooper in sight. That's either good because it uses the characters or dumb because why is C.C. stomping through wetlands wearing his hood with only his often treacherous minions nearby?

I never posted my commentary about Zartan in the prior issue, but his early appearances (after his issue 24 sneak peek) hardly made him a bad-a$$. (In Action Force's debut of Zartan, he's a mostly mute killing machine) Firefly, too, hardly seems so great. Getting captured by Mutt, Torpedo and Tripwire?

Also, Copperhead should've been in these issues...instead of the ones he was in...which is NO issues (order of battle hardly counts).

6.5/10

This is one of my favorite issues of the series. Back before Snake Eyes was overused, this issue and the following gave great background on a character that at the time I didn't know anything about. Most of the time Snake Eyes is portrayed as a soulless killing machine, and stories like this show the humanity of the character. Also, linking him with Stalker and Stormshadow in Vietnam and his life in Japan were great storytelling IMO.

I was pretty impartial to this issue and the next one. I was enjoying the swamp adventure much more. I did like the Soft Master and the kid and stuff, but... I dunno... The story was fine cuz it didn't go ninja crazy quite yet. NOT that I'm against ninja action cuz the whole SE & SS go to Cobra Island was awesome!
