Default What makes a mall a mall?

Greetings mortals!

We all know about malls, and yet there are times when one mall doesn't really fit a definition of mall. For me, a shopping mall is a collection of stores with an area between the stores that you can walk--a neutral area--where there might be kiosks and orange julius drink stands and other things on display.

And there are outdoor malls where the sidewalk is the neutral area between the stores. So that when you leave one store you are in a walking zone that doesn't really have any established stores. And you walk in this area to another store.

But there are other types of malls, some without any walking area. As soon as you enter a department store, you are in this "mall". When you exit to go to another store, there isn't any boundary. One collection of displays belongs to one store, another collection of displays belong to the other store. Is this a mall?

And what strange malls have you been to?
