Thanks for the well wishes for my beloved Mac, all!
I got it fixed - well, sort of.
I got online at work today and found a "fix". If you hold down shift+option+command+delete during start up, the computer bypasses (or something like that, I think) the regular start-up procedure and goes into a Safe Mode / Start-up.
It takes a bit longer to boot, but works just as well (and fast) when Start-up's complete. Of course, I figure I'd better start backing up some files, juuust in case
And yeah, the ol' Mac and I have been through a lot together. It was a gift from my parents for graduating college. I learned most of what I know about Photoshop / digital graphics on it. She's been such a remarkable computer for so many years, with nary a hiccup, that I'd never even think of switching to a PC.
