3 3/4" (inch) is the classic 80's Joe scale, pioneered in the 70's by Fisher Price's Adventure People, then popularized by Kenner's Star Wars...
1:18 is modelling terminology, 1/18th of life size (right?). It's used by people who think collecting toys should be considered a serious hobby.
While more or less compatible, 3 3/4" doesn't necessary equal 1:18. As comparing 25th line and vintage Real American Hero shows.
