I think this could be a good thing to inspire members, and encourage commitment. I don't really see why competition has to be a dirty word...

What I would suggest is, instead of doing a thread or something for giving awards right NOW, we basically introduce the competition so that the first awards will be for the best of 2008 (seems like the ideal time to start something like that going).

In a year's time, each member can submit their own entry for each category they want to try for (nothing to stop anyone from asking around to get others' opinions on what they feel their best submissions would be) and then once each entrant is in we can all have our say to decide the winner for each category. It doesn't have to be a straight poll thread, so no anonymous voting (making it harder for dishonesty) and anyone being insulting or flaming (which I'd doubt would happen anyway) would be subject to the usual site codes of conduct anyway.

I dunno about actual prizes but there'd at least be prestige -- winners could put it in their signature or that bit under their username (eg my "Wasss once a man..."). If anyone wanted to arrange physical prizes then that'd need a bit more planning and MAYBE would bring out worse sides of people (I'll agree, greed can do nasty things) but if we're doing it for its own sake, how is it going to be doing anything but inspiring people to be as imaginative, creative and attentive as possible when coming up with pics to post so that they might then want to put them forward in a showcase of the best that our community is capable of? The winners get some recognition for the work they'll have put in and everyone else has something to aim for in readiness for the next awards...!
