New law restricts re-sale of kid's products
 

A new federal law is raising concerns and questions nationwide and here in Austin
On February 10, 2009 it will be illegal to re-sell any used children's products including toys and clothing. That is according to the U.S. Consumer Protection & Safety Commission who pushed for the new laws after dozens of toys were recalled in 2008 because of lead concerns.

Toys, clothing and other items used by children under 12 will be subjected to lead testing and will have to have labels on them to prove that they have passed inspection.

What is raising the ire of parents and business owners far and wide is what this will mean to clothing, toys and other children products made before February 10, 2009.

Gary Walthall, the owner of Once upon a Child, a resale shop specializing in children's clothing and other items, is afraid that he'll have to close up shop.

Adding to the confusion and frustration is the fact that the U.S. Consumer Products and Safety Commission is not returning calls or e-mails to the countless re-salers and even journalists who have tried in vain to get clarification on what the law means to garage sales and how it will be enforced.

If this messes up my shopping for bits and pieces at Savers, The Salvation Army, the DAV, and Goodwill, I will be super pi$$ed. They will end up throwing away every cool set piece, every piece of dollhouse furniture, every old vehicle, every old figure, and anything else that could possibly be used to make a dio. It sounds like it applies even to stuff without paint. I've been reading up on it a bit and if it comes out the way it sounds like now, we better start making black market connections for used plastic. Disgusting. Government, get out of my face! especially about toys!

Another case of government trying to take our right to choose away from us. We get the same thing here, it's like they think of grown adults as helpless morons who can't make an intelligent decision in their own best interests. There was a piece on the news here yesterday about a proposed federal law banning foods with high salt content. For f*cks sake, just put a warning on the label and let people make their own choices. I'm sick of being babied by chickensh!t, over protective politically correct politicians. :mad:

Ohh but Outrider..."What about the children?" Politicians are only trying to protect their constituents by passing unimportant legislation and appear to be doing something positive and helpful...all the while ignoring the financial markets, banks, industries who export jobs, and executives who mismanage billions of dollars but then expect the government to pull their butts out when it all crashes down. This is super legislation...super!!!!! :rolleyes:
