These guys just search every single site on the internet and spam any easy targets. They don't care if it's a toy forum, a wrestling forum, a teen drama forum... they'll just spam them.

The kicker is that it's probably a spambot. There is software out there that does it all on it's own. Learned about that one over on the JBL. Boggles my mind that there are programs set up to do that. And people get PAID to do that???

Are you not using CAPTCHA (image verification on signup)? It's rare that there are actually people doing that.

It's also possible that the image verification you're using has been compromised.

Talk to Mr. Fel about that one. I don't think we have an image verification. I signed up again under a fake name cuz I was trying to figure some stuff out and... I didn't notice an activation visual thingy... Fortunately the forum is pretty slow so I can easily delete and ban things quickly.

It's been a long time since I ran a vB forum, but you might want to check the admin control panel to see if there's an option for CAPTCHA. I know it exists in other branches of vB, but I don't think I've ever used 3.0.x.
