Posting pictures

Two questions:

I appear to have reached my limit of picture posting space. Is there a way to get more space, or do I have to delete old pictures somehow?

How does one go about posting pictures in the replies to posted pictures?

Am I being excluded from something? Am I not one of the cool kids? Damn! How do I be a dork on a website full of dorks and geeks and nerds?!? I'm going to bed

You actually asked 3 questions.....but s'ok :p

1-Unless Nate changed the bandwidth, you shouldn't ever 'reach the limit'.....copy and paste what the site tells you in this regard, then post it here and we can figure out what your asking

2-Are you talking about directing people to a picture you posted on JoeDios or do you want to post a completely different picture in your own uploaded contribution? If its the 1st one, simply copy/paste the http: link in your 'quick reply'-and give people a 'heads up' to ask them to check out your shot.
If its the 2nd one, you can utilize an offsite hosting (flickr or photobucket or another similar site)-simply copy/paste the [img] link that they provide for you to share with others

3-Well, as far as this one goes........everybody's got to answer in their own way :D  :p

Otto the Otter 01-01-2010 09:44 PM

OK, GenScar, here's what it shows me

Your Stats
You have used a total of 61.53 MB space out of 62.22 MB space allowed.
You have 711.79 KB space remaining.
<---------------------And a really long red line goes here--------------------->

Then when I try to post a picture...

Sorry, but you do not have enough space on your account to add this image.

Filesize: 1342437
Space remaining: -613569

Thanks

General Scarlett 01-01-2010 09:50 PM

How quickly are you uploading between pictures? There is a 1-minute time limit between uploads and posting replies on pictures.....if your uploading 'bam, bam, bam', then it will give you a 'You cannot' reply.

Try again right now to do 1 picture and see what happens, then post it here

Otto the Otter 01-01-2010 09:55 PM

Okey-day...just tried it again and got the same message that I posted above

General Scarlett 01-01-2010 10:07 PM

Hmmmmmm.....the only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is what is your picture size? The picture size cannot exceed 2.0(*technically shoot for 1.9*) or 600x800

Otto the Otter 01-01-2010 10:17 PM

HMMM...kinda talking over my head there, my computer is nothing really more than an old typwriter with a black & white TV sitting on it and phone glued to it's side. OK, not really, but when it comes to pictures, I didn't know there was a way to change their size.

The pictures I'm currently trying to upload are no bigger than any others I've uploaded in the past.

General Scarlett 01-01-2010 10:36 PM

Ok, when I upload pictures, my stats say this:

You have used a total of 212.01 MB space out of Unlimited space allowed. You have Unlimited space remaining.

Now when I'm uploading, I have to make sure that my picture size is under 2.0MB, otherwise I'm told that the picture is too big.

How long has this been going on or is it just something that happened today? Maybe its just a fluky thing and by tomorrow it'll be all sorted out.........but if not, then your best bet would be to send a PM directly to Hammerfel and ask him to look into it since he's the only one who can perform any changes to accounts.

Additionally, if anybody else is having this problem, they should post that fact up here....just a thought.

Otto the Otter 01-01-2010 10:44 PM

It just happened last night for the first time, then tried it again today and when you asked me to try it. I'll shoot a message to the Hammer-man and see what he says. Thanks for your help.

Trench-Viper 01-02-2010 10:21 AM

All the large version of my pictures have been removed, so I guess the site is coming down on huge size pictures now. Try reducing them to 25% size and maybe use the sharpen tool if the picture get blurred.

I'm a dork???

The BATman 01-04-2010 01:41 AM

I took a look and for me it also says "Unlimited space allowed", but I'm very much certain there used to be a limit on my account, so this has changed some time ago. Perhaps at one of the two recent downtimes ? A lot of strange things happening at this site, nowadays. It was never the most stable of sites, but it hasn't improved at all lately.

Otto the Otter 01-04-2010 01:55 AM

I shot a message to Hammerfel, but I haven't heard back from him, but I'll give him a couple of days before I start busting skulls. hopefully it's something that can be fixed, I just spent the last few day days taking some really kewl shots that the world needs to see. They will bring tears to your eyes and make your own photos seem inferior. :)
OK, not really, but I did take some pictures this weekend I'd like to post.

I think all of us should respect the 800x600 cap.

Incidentally, on what do you base that 600x800 limit ? I don't recall ever reading about that condition before on JoeDios. And most pictures on here are bigger than that. To be honest, I don't recall reading about that 2MB limit either, though that one could make a bit more sense.

Roland da Thompson Gunner 01-04-2010 01:13 PM

You can't post anymore pictures due to your member rank, originally a veteran member was someone who had 200 posts, but that got changed. You have to be a veteran member to get unlimited space

I think it's the size in KB rather than the pixel dimensions that's important. Most photo editing software has a tool that allows the quality and therefore size of a jpeg to be adjusted. I leave mine set on 6/10 (medium quality), and the pictures rarely exceed 200 or 300KB for a busy 1280 x 960 shot, and still look okay.

So...

what about a cap of 1280 x 960 and 500k?

Death_at_Midnight 01-04-2010 05:02 PM

I don't think it has anything to do with a cap of any sort. I think the server is having problems.. like someone might have not configured some directory with the correct permissions, or not set a directory file quota limit to sufficient size.

The little blurb above my avatar says I'm a veteran member, so that shouldn't be a factor.

Quoted for most likely truth.

Interestingly, next to your post it says "Senior Member" where others have "Veteran".

You're right, it does say Senior, not Veteran.
Which I don't understand, seeings how I'm under 65 but did serve in the military...hmmmmm...... :) This is the worst kind of discrimination; the kind against me! :)
I guess I'll wait out my time until I can become a Veteran and post more pictures.

cyko 01-05-2010 06:53 AM

I'm thinking it's server bugs, not a dimension cap. I generally upload shots at a larger size (~1024 wide) because the forum will redimension the displayed shot to 800x600. The benefit is that you can click the photo and get a slightly larger version to peruse. But I keep the quality (size) around 200k if I can. Hopefully everything will return to normal after the server move.

I think 90 days from join date and 300 posts...not picture posts, but comments gets unlimited space

Since Otto has a higher post count than me but has no unlimited space while I do, it will probably rather be the join date than the post count. Anyway, somewhere someone will know all the dirty details and sooner or later share the answer with us.

How many posts do you have?

I can't even post pics still and I got thousands of posts

Somewhere in the 240s as of now and depending on the exact date I joined, I may have a few more days to wait for the 90 limit as well.

Hey! Somebody bring up something interesting to discuss so I can pad my posts without looking like I'm padding my posts!

I've heard of those two bands, but can't say that I've heard their stuff, or if I have, I can't recall what they sounded like.
I love the sound of two dueling and/or harmonizing guitars, a bass that is more than just rythem, machine gun fire double bass drums with a skin beater who knows how to use every piece of his 38 piece kit and a lead singer with a fluid, melodic voice that can hit teh highest highs and the lowest lows.
Granted that doesn't really describe Dave Mustaine's singing but Megadeth just plain kicks your ass and makes you say, "Thank you sir! May I please have another?"
If I had to choose between Maiden or Helloween as my favorite band, I think my head would explode.
Thanks to XM radio, I learned of several new bands (or at least new to me) that don't get played on regular radio because Hard Rock stations don't acknowledge a band unless they're Metallica.
My favorite newer band is a six piece act out of England called DragonForce. When I first heard them, the song was "Operation Ground and Pound." It started in with the awesome guitars and uberfast drums, and I waited for a minute and half, wondering, "Will this be a great, smooth sounding voice, or just another death-metal Cookie Monster singer?" So happy to hear it was the former. I don't have any problem with the Death Metal sound, the music is awesome, but the growl singing wears quickly on me.
