army building for dios
most of us army build, but why and how many should we have? some army build just for the collection. i never did this, i never displayed my figures, and i never had the money to but 10 or 12 of the same figure when there were others i had to buy. besides, i could use only two and pretend there were others around when playing. what im wondering is when army building for dio purpose, how many is enough? myself, im thinking 4 to 6, depending on the figure. in most cases there wont be a ton of the same troop in any dio shot. if there are, then photoshop can remedy this. i see no need for more then 4 CG's, you dont see them together that much, so 4 will suffice. eels are a troop you dont see dozens of at one place either. how about all the others? im thinking 6, 8 at most. that way you have a squad. what are your thoughts? keep in mind im not talking displaying or just collecting here, im talking army building for the purpose of making dios.

I try to keep my armybuilding under control in general. I think I have no more than 5 of each 25th Cobra Trooper and 8 CGs (a couple for custom fodder). I think 5 is a nice number for me. I don't do huge dios so giant parade formations aren't an issue. The most I'd use in any given set up is what you've seen in my Deadly Encounters shots. That was a LOT to pose in that confined area. I have enough to properly man the few Cobra vehicles I have customized for battle scenes.
So for me I try to keep it around 5 of any particular version of trooper. Now I do plan on building up a nice sized Joe arctic force but those are going to be named characters so I don't count them as armybuilders. |
I think it depends on the kind of scene you want to show. Soundwave's Cobra comms centre looked awesome with all the Tele-Vipers, and Sonn's story with the pile of dead Vipers would have been difficult to achieve with Photoshop. Also, some of us don't have Photoshop...!

Hey, don't forget about the shot where Major Bludd and 20 Blueshirts are about to enter the compound. That was my gratuitious HISS TANK and BLUESHIRTS shot. :p
|
I try to keep a number of 4 for my cobra troops, however just from troops that I really like.

The pile-o-vipers just sticks in my memory as the most original way of showcasing a collection of army-builders I've ever seen. We never even saw them fighting/dying, they're introduced to the story purely as corpses! |
Tis why you must have MANY!!!
But hey, it's fun to collect as many as you can too! I've got 40+ Neovipers and Vipers at my disposable. And if I ever come into mad cash, I'll start wiping out SicDunbine of DTC Blueshirts too! Someday, I'll get my armies where I want them. I need a few more DTC CGs (since a bunch of mine disappeared), Red Cobra Claws and maybe a few more Razor Troopers. :D |
Army building is my weakness, especially with no new stuff worthy of my cash! I army build troops because I like them, I have never bought troops just to use in a picture. For instance, I have 24 Night Vipers, but I've never posted a shot with more than about a dozen of them in it. I generally stick to 6 or 8 for most troops, but happily exceed that for my faves. Put it this way, my Cobra/Mars army now numbers more than 1,050...what does that tell you?

Depending on the figure, I try for 6 of each trooper. There are exceptions, though :D .

DAMB OUTRIDER  THATS CRAZY
TROOPS LIKE VIPERS AND BLUE SHIRTS I GO WITH 24. SPEACILTY TEAMS LIKE TECHNO TELE AND NIGHT VIPERS I GO FOR 8 TO 12 |
I just picked up 20 of the black and gold Sand Vipers, I have well over 30+ Vipers (all different colors etc). I LOOOOVE army building. I told this to my GF and she ended up getting me 11 Cobra Legions for X-Mas. I do it simply because I like the figure. Like Craig said I don't buy for pics, just my own love.

11 Cobra Legions??? All at once??? Wow... That means you have 11 Air Troopers and it also means that you have 11 Storm Shadows. Course, at least you can use 1 stormy as a default and the other 11 can be his ninja clan, right??? I actually did that but in an opposite way. The Legions Stormy is my default and the 4 Stormys from the 1st 5-pack act as the White Lotus Society.

I tend to get a little crazy when it comes to army building. It's HIGHLY addictive and not to be taken lightly. Especially with the 25th since they can be bought locally. I think Techno Viper and Strato are the only Builders I have that I've only got 1 of. :o
For scenes I try not to clutter the shot with endless masses, but at the same time like to show Cobra as having a huge army. So it's a 50/50 swap for me. |
I go for 10 of each special vipers (Frag/Flack/incinerators/night/range, etc.) As for Regular vipers and blueshirts (to include Nightwatch) I try to build platoons of 30.
Squads= 2 fire teams of 4, RTO and OIC. Platoon = 3 squads. This doesn't always work. I also have a platoon of Neo Vipers and CLAWS. The Claws I use as Extreme heavy weapons experts, mine carry .50 cals, mini guns, Grenade launchers, etc. But for a dio, 6 is more than enough. If you can fit more than that into your shot, you're probably doing a "Show of Force" pic of troops at a rally! |
I really only collect figures from before 1990, I only keep mint or near mint figures. I am not Donald Trump, so this limits my army building. My biggest army is 1982 & 83 Cobra Troopers & Officers which is up to 20. I have 6 CGs & 6 Vipers, most of my specialized troops are about 4 each. On the Joe side the only thing I Army build is Steel Brigade, I have a version A,B,C & 2 Ds & looking for a Gold head.

Yup and I only use 3 of the SS (1 regular, 2 private SS force) I'm looking to unload the rest so if any one is interested PM me, they're just taking up space here. I used the 11 CC as my Cobra Storm troopers which worked out nicely for me as army building a super elite squad went. |
I'd like to army build but back when i was able to spend money of stuff i was an idiot and just bought the cool named ones, and of coruse they all poofed when i moved out so i'm down to 1 half of a viper some where a wild weasel (who i use as a crimson guard pilot rather then mr Weasel) and a razor trooper.

Not much of an army builder, but I like small squads of 2 to 6. I made an exception on the Viper Pit and bought two 6 packs...it was cheaper than trying to eBay v.1's. They need to be modified though...
I noticed from another thread that Family Dollar has VvV single carded figures for $2/ each. Are there any of those worth "squad" building? Sand Viper? Tele-Viper? Black Snake-Eyes for customs? |

All of the above. |
I'd build SandVipers before TeleVIpers but having a few on hand are good. Always need a few comm guys running around.
I build in squads of 10. 4 squads = 1 Platoon so you can see how I operate. As it stands now, I have 1 platoon of VIpers and NeoVipers, 2 squads of Blueshirts and almost 1 squad of Razor Troopers and Claws. |

I have 1 short term major goal and 1 long term goal for my army building. Short term - 100 Motor Vipers (I am at 57), 100 Vipers (Pit) ((I am at 116)), and 40 TeleVipers (I am at 42). Long term - 5 to 30 of each specialty Viper (Night, Heat, Saw, etc....) |
