Okay, I'll see about taking some pics today. No clue about what set they'll be in, but a pic is coming....

First, since '82 GI Joe has essentially been a collection of trademarks that Hasbro can license out and profit from (comics, cartoons, etc). There's nothing wrong with that (well maybe by v10000 of certain characters there are). So in the broadest sense, there is nothing wrong with trying to make a live action movie.

The problem from everything I've read about it (avoiding plot spoilers) from production stories, to test audiance results, to people involved say that this will not be a movie I enjoy. It's going to be a bad movie because it'll have such a convoluted plot that is given little to no explanation given it's team of writers/director/producers. It has nothing to do with changing what GI Joe or certain characters are because they are just names for Hasbro to push product in the grand scheme.

Also, it'll suffer from the "too big and too interconnected cast/plot phenomena" that many multistorried or team based movies suffer from. I've only seen two movies made in 50 years (i'm much younger, just saying, TCM that's all) pull off a cast larger than 4 that is all interconnected. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World and Love Actually. All others have failed in the area of plot or character development, and they never live up to the hype.

Some people say, lighten up, it's a pop corn movie. Sure, but they should at minimally try to have a story that makes sense or isn't so predictable, that it could be written by a Hills wanna be celebutard. It doesn't have to win an Academy Award, but it shouldn't automatically go for a Razzie either.

Cynical, yep, but I only got so much $$$ to spend on things like movies, toys, books, etc that the spouse has no input on. You know, 30 something with his own allowance. I waste it on a terrible film, that's one less figure or Star Wars book (another collecting hobby of mine) that can't be purchased.

Maybe, just maybe this time of thing should be done as a TV miniseries or something. 2 hours just isn't enough time to pull off the complexity that they're obviously aiming for and probably going to miss.

I admit I am not expecting much from it, not because I am an negitive nancy or anything but really the movie makers have had plenty of opertunities now to make me want to see it and they haven't. At this point I am only going to see it cause it says GI Joe, and that is the wrong reason to want to see a film.

Sonneilon 07-03-2009 07:35 PM

ACTUALLY, Zedhatch, some ppl go to movies to see the previews.

In any case... EVERYTHING (ok, 98%) that's been told, it's been known for quite a few months. But the Storm Shadow thing... I heard he's Korean but I thought ppl were referencing that Stormy is being PLAYED by a Korean, not Tommy Arashikage IS Korean. IF the movie makes the beloved Stormy Korean AND that's he's a Japanese ninja, that might be an interesting dynamic since Japanse HATE Koreans.

Anyway. Let's try to keep the GI JOE MOVIE bashing to one thread. I believe 1 has already been started.

Well said!

This cuts to the heart of what I feel will be the fall of this movie. It's going to be too interconnected that 2 hours isn't going to work for it.

One aspect of the Star Trek movie success is that non-fan's got to understand the characters and the ST universe. The ST film didn't jump into the middle of a long history of characters and their inter-plays through the decades of character development.

GI Joe has a complex history of characters, made more complex by the various outlets.. cartoon, comics, etc. It's not going to be easy to translate a long and complex history in 2 hours.

I do agree that the right way would be to focus on a simple plot, have a sub-plot for leading into a second film, but keep things un-complex as possible. There's probably more $$$ to be made for Hasbro if they do several films than one that tries to cover all.

Darnit... my bad there BATman!!!

Sometimes I forget that somepeople might still (want to) know very little about the movie...

Bu in my defence, I didnt know/realize the stuff I was pointing out would be new anymore... as it's been "out there" for some time now...

and of course they might not (all) be true afterall...(thats what I'm hoping at least)

And Sonn here is a spoiler about the Korean SS thingy and some others:

Spoiler:

If I remember this correctly....
Supposedly SS was taught by a Japanese Ninja master in Vietnam and that SE was there too....as an orphan american/french or whatever his nationality is in the movie...they were like really really young (7-10 or something)

oh! and Heavy Duty is British...
Breaker is Moroccon...
Gover Girl is Tzeckh...
Scarlet is Canadian...
Baroness supposedly is american...

Whoa... uh, ok EasySimpleStuff. Man, what a weird backstory to this movie!

Death_at_Midnight 07-06-2009 07:36 PM

In case anyone is interested, in the kiddie section of your local large bookstore may have a ROC Storybook with nice pictures of the movie.
