Hey guys,
Several 'Joe sites have been hit by a spammer called Lady_Admin. It's sending out a PM tailored to each site saying:
Dear (your name here) A virus alert was noticed on your computer. We highly recommend you to check your computer and perform online virus check at our site immediately: h**p://antivirus.effectmeds.com/(your name here)
If it spams JD and if you get this in your PM box, DO NOT open it, as it's Malware. Simply delete it.

Good to know. I got one in my JoeSightings box but since I wasn't logged in, it didn't work! Thanks GS!

I think I got hit with this a couple months ago. Totally locked down my computer, had to go back to factory install. Virus programs didn't touch it, even when I pointed them directly at the file locaion. Bad news.

Thanks for the warning GS.
I think the spammer won't work here since JD doesn't work 100% ;)

Yeah, it's a scam. They tell you over the internet you have 135 (or some unGodly number) of Virii on your PC. AND DON'T FORGET!!!! DOWNLOAD OUR NEW "FREE" PUTZBUSTER VIRUS SOFTWARE BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!.
Then you download it and it runs....and guess what? Finds 135 virii.....well, if they knew this over the internet, why did I need this download? Because my newly hooked sucker, our FREE software only finds the threats and LOCKS YOUR PC IN ORDER TO KEEP YOU SAFE! BUT FOR $69.99, YOU CAN DOWNLOAD OUR PREMIUM SOFTWARE AND GET UNLOCK YOUR OWN COMPUTER!! (Or, you can not pay it and have to reformat the friggin drive, losing EVERYTHING) Gee, thanks @$$holes. Kidnap my operating system and ransom my PC back to me!
Here's the REAL deal from Me, I'm a Systems Engineer/Administrator for the MArine Corps. GET NORTON...or MCaffee, either is great! Don't wanna spend the $49.99 a year for firewall and virus protection? Great, just don't call me when you PC $hits the bed because you downloaded the latest Trojan or Worm! You CAN get free stuff from the internet, but you never know who made it and what it's letting through! Norton and MCaffe have a reputation of making GREAT virus software/firewalls/Intrusion detection systems etc!
And as a paid professional in the computer field, I'm gonna tell you this.....no software is 100% foolproof. You have to be suspicious! Don't open emails because they sound cool! Don't download free software (it usually has backdoors build in!), if you surf the Porn, Gamers, hackers. video/audio/software pirate sites, you are gonna end up getting screwed by something sooner or later! Those sites are LADEN with nasty malware! If you get an email from your bank or eBay or anyone you do business with asking for your Social Security number, your PIN number or account number (Checking OR Savings), delete the email....even if it says your account will be closed within 24 hours. Call the bank and ask them or better yet, drive to your bank and talk to them! If someone calls you at work and asks for your Password or starts asking about someone trying to get info on them WACH OUT! It's called Social Engineering, hackers use it to get info and guess how to break into your stuff.
Oh, BTW, JoeDios is going to be a pay site. I need your bank account numbers, pin and Social Security Code so we can charge you the $4.99 a year fee or your account will be shut down tomorrow! DON'T WAIT!!!

thanks G.S. for the heads up. I had a nasty virus that I couldn't get rid of when I had my laptop reformated it completely died on me. so I would definitely be real careful.

Wait, is the PM itself dangerous, or do you have to click on the link too?

The PM is harmless, just don't click on the link. Nothing to worry about, just one of those ancient "ask people to infect their own computer" scams.
