Custom: TRON Effect?

Greetings all!

I'm looking to do a few customs for the dio I've been working on. Recently I've been doing a hacker Viper, now it's time to do a custom for use in a "virtual" cyber environment. Want to have a storyline involving Mainframe fending off a hack-attack in a cyber environment. So to me what better way to help give the effect of a cyber environment than the old TRON look.

I do remember in the 80's there was a line of TRON figures, 3 3/4" scale. However I don't have any to examine and do light tests with. However, any ideas of paint or other effects to give a figure a TRON-like look? I'm thinking of some paint that will react well with certain lights.. maybe black light. Any ideas on that?

My understanding is that "TRON" was shot under blacklights for the live-action parts in the virtual world. That'll probably give you the effect you're looking for, though lighting might be tricky. I had a set of Testor's fluorescents when I was a kid. Pink and orange were as obnoxiously loud as you'd expect. I did vehicle headlights (e.g. Stinger) in yellow and they looked good, especially under a blacklight. But it was the '80s, and dayglow colors were everywhere. I don't know if you can still find paint like that. Around Halloween, you might find glow-in-the-dark paint (like the Night Force stickers), but that'll only be white/yellow in color. Keep us posted on your project; as a big TRON fan, I'm interested to see how it turns out.

I've seen glow-in-the-dark paint in the craftstore before but in my experience it isn't so great. That said I imagine a black light and some neon/flourescent paints will do the trick, but the blacklight is going need to be your only light source for you to get the full effect. Both Apple Barrel and Testors Model Master Acryl make flourescent paints in a variety of colors I would start there.

Not necessarily. If you use the blacklight as the primary, everything looks purple. But that's the trick, using a dim alternate light source and just allowing the blacklight to pickup the fluorescent parts. Won't be as vivid as the film, but I'd wager they did some post-processing to work the color out anyway.

It's kinda hard to explain. From what i understood, some of the shots were literally cut out, a light filtered thru the back, blah blah blah... I'd have to watch the MAKING OF again to see if they say what's up.

I used to have the tron figures, I actually swalowed one of the glow in the dark frisbi/disc things they came with, and for the two weeks that followed I would turn off the light after going to the restroom to see if I could see it glowing in the dark!!! LOL (I was an unusual child)
