View Full Version : HAll of Heros? More like Hall of Re-releases!

Has anyone seen this new wave called "Hall of Heros". Is it me or is it the same figures that have been released and re-released time and time again, just in flashy packages?
Is it asking to much for NEW characters?

Ive seen em, and I dont really care for em. They are supposedly retooled and new parts and what not, but I already have these guys. New characters would be much preferred. But, looks like its easier to re release all the old ones again. They should use the energy of remakes on new guys.

New characters? From Hasbro? Yeah, right! Why bother expending creative energy on new characters when you can just keep banging out the old ones (Snake Eyes version 40, anyone?, etc) and the sheep will keep buying them and keep the profit flowing in. It's just too easy.

It's unlikely we'll get any new characters in the near future since Hasbro just vetoed IDWs new character because they think the Joe roster is already too large. With the movie coming out we can expect more Duke and Snake Eyes figures.

SE is almost at v 50 now.
But yeah really we haven't truely seen new characters for years, been the same complaint since JvC and even then they gave us cookie cutters (I mean they were just replacements for the ones that were killed off in the comic if you notice and really had no character to them).
I was in utter shock when we got Wrath and Trakker (granted Trakker isn't new, but new to the joe line at least). And the few Army builders we got too.
I just started voting with my wallet, if the new whatever fig doesn't cut it, I don't buy it, I keep thinking if we all do that hasbro might start getting the hint (but I doubt it as they probably will just cancel the line again and blame the fans).

www.hasbrotoyshop.com has them too. When I saw them... I mean, I KNEW about them coming but... Anyway... I guess if you want an official looking packaging that makes certain figures stand out, that's the way to go for collectors. Waste of time but I'm sure it's just a carry over or something.
As for new characters, I believe Hasbro tried and they got might scared when the love/hate relationship was about 50/50. That's just a wild stab at those the fans accepted easily and those they hated. Allow me to sample these characters, hell, I might even do a poll later to see where the JD stood.
Crosshair. YEAH!
Link Talbot. BOO!
HiTech. Eh.
Hard Drive. BOO!
Major Barrage. YEAH!
Bombstrike. YEAH!
Coil Crusher. BOO!
Sand Viper. YEAH!
Sand Scorpion. Eh.
Razor Trooper. Eh.
Widescope. Uh, where's Shockwave? Why is this guy's head so small???
VenMax. BOO!
Hannibal. Meh.
Agent Faces. ???
That's just a random sampling and how people saw them from both here and JBL when they were first released. Honestly, I don't know how people felt towards the Venomized Troops. Horrible concept, so-so figures (really hit and miss, Outrider DOES like his Swamp Rats, y'know?), and then a few hits.

Word!
that is the truth right there.. they will cancel the line.. and you know when you think about it.. it's this side of Hasbro I hate with a passion.
"You best buy our figures otherwise it's cancelmania on everything.. then you'll have no GIJOE whatsoever to buy at all.. and when faced with a choice.. most people will rather have something.. than nothing at all.. no matter how poop the choice is.
Not trying to intentionally hate on the 25th, because the RAH style has it's problems.. but remembering back to what Hasbro promised.. I'm still not sold on that fact they delivered.. and they really should of done for their experience and skills.

I understand the concern over lack of new characters, but I don't think the "Hall of Heroes" assortment should be singled out for this. It was supposed to be re-releases from the very beginning! Months ago, Hasbro had people vote on their favorite 25th Anniversary figures from all the single-carded waves to date (at that time), with the promise that the ten winners would be released in special packaging with new decos. We can't really target something for being exactly what we were told it was going to be, can we?

the problem for me is the price point. I hate that after 2 years of the line I have to pay so much for fixed figures that came out wrong in the first place. To me its just a big "Why?" Why not make these great versions to begin with.

Why bother putting the effort into the line if people buy the crap anyway?
Extra time and resource into a line that's already selling.. you really think hasbro would care about the consumer that much?? :o
By the way your point emphasizes alot on what I've said all along about the 25th line. We were initially promised a product that would be an improvement on the RAH style and previous lines..
I ask how can a figure line be an improvement if the entire waves and series have just as many flaws as the previous waves and releases?
My single point about hasbro was that they lied outright from the start, got sloppy in QC and held off the product to a point where fans were literally 'starved of teh line' as i said in the other thread.. if you offer someone a choice of
"shit product" or "no product" they'll usually 9 times out of 10 take the shit stuff (assuming they've been denied for so long).
Please dont hate on my opinion (as I know that alot of this site is seperated on opinion for/against the 25th) I can only call this from my own viewpoint and what was advertised back before the 25th was released. I know that hasbro doesnt judge their line based on if fans like it or not, it's all about the sales.. and for that I can't fault them, for other collectors the 25th has been a blessing, to get back all the other stuff they missed out on in the last 15-20 years and thats great.. but for a fan who was in it from the start.. it's kind of like a huge slap in the face with a 40lb trout.. and then hasbro not apologising.
I'm done ranting..

I 100% agree, the price point isholding me off a bit, I can get microman figures for that in many places. Plus I am 90% certain the molds will be released again somewhere. But price is a key factor for me as well that I didn't mention.

No offence intended, but hasbro has been lying so much for so long I hardly notice any more. I gave up with AA Storm Shadow back in the VvV days (If you don't remember, Hasbro said that they would never, ever produce another T-Crotch figure at the con that year, meanwhile this figure was in production at the time and right after fan outrage hit they claimed there was a retool, but of course they had JUST lied so who knew, thankfully that time they were truthfull as it was my absolute favorite SS to date, but hopefully you see where I am going).
But my point is I just don't notice anymore

No worries mate.. No offence taken :o
I'd like you to explain your paragraph a little better though please.
You say that hasbro lied about a retool and then it turned out it was a retool and so you accepted it?
Or are you just mentioning that Hasbro has lied so much in the last 15 years or so that it's not worth even bringing up/noticing.
Apologies, I've read your paragraph 3 times and it confuses me, perhaps you can think of a better way to rephrase it or a better example.

Outrider, YES I singled you out. But not so much in a bad way. I don't know how the Swamp Rats are in your verse. If they are genetically enhanced hew-mons, cool. If not, cool. Just as long as they aren't rats w/ human DNA!!! Seriously tho, they are a good figure. I don't mind the concept of Venomization; mixing of animal dna and humans. Didn't the Germans try that in WWII?
Whatever your use of the Swamp Rats, I know you are cool with them. Your shots always look good. Question is, are they good character/army builders in regard to the topic at hand?
Because we all know that there are differences between
Concept/Idea
Design
Execution
Blackout's concept was great.
Blackout's design was so-so
Blackout's execution was crap (all cuz of the arms and cross-eyedness)
Therefore, WAS Blackout worth bringing in? Was he worth making a crappy figure of? That's what it really comes down to. New character? that's nice, too bad the execution of figure and to a degree, the comic, it SUCKED!

I agree, a new character is fine, as long as they really think and follow thru with it till the end. Some of these characters it seems they created this great concept for and then someone in production sneezed at the last minute and now look what we got.

Both points are uniquely true,
when hasbro comes up with a good idea, they often lack the 3 things needed to pull it off, which again comes back to what I said earlier about them.
"Why put the effort into new characters when fans wont buy them, we'll just rehash what we had out already and change the colours slightly, it's a character they know and we wont have to redesign or explain his background"
In the last 5-6 years they've released some very good characters that should of been replacements directly for the original 13, but without the effort behind it and correct execution their sales wont be as good.
But hasbro either doesn't see it, or continues to ignore it because they are stupid.
They should just admit that people wont buy their new characters because the product isn't that great and not because fans 'dont back the line'
it's quite clever what they have done to the fanbase really, why tackle the issue when you can just avoid it all together?
The characters they are releasing have been done in a previous wave, for the most part they seem to have the same issues as before. They recoloured them and slapped a new series title on them.. they'll sell.. because theres enough of a fanbase out there now to support the series.
Two things will kill their line.
1. Fans will become f'cked off with their price gouging and hiking up or lack of availability. It's still happening in some areas and I know some of my friends in the UK have had to get assists from friends in the Usa to keep up.
2. They will run out of ideas. Potentially this could go two ways..
i) they will turn to the subteams idea, sky patrol, python patrol (already seen this in the line  ) they might even re-release movie intergrated stuff as a result, and or Eco Warriors/Ninja force.
ii) they will cancel the line, blame the fan base for non-backing of the line but put it in a way that it's because of the economic climate problems the world has i.e
"The line isn't working out as an economical profit like we hoped, fans dont have the financial resources to back the line because of the current economic crisis"
Again totally avoiding the two issues, they got greedy and overpriced.. and didnt have any backroom ideas when the nostalgia wears off. For the most part the 25th has been nothing but rereleases and repaints of everything we had in the 80s and 90s. Which is fantastic if you dont have those 1st versions. :D
Not so great if you spent hundreds of $ker-ching$ already on your vintage stuff.

Cool G, I didn't have a problem with being mentioned, I do like the Swamp Rats - as figures. For me they are just regular grunts who's specialty is swamp fighting. The venomization concept and what's written on the file card mean nothing to me; their place in my Joeverse is determined by me. If I don't like their backstory I completely ignore it, which is how everyone's Joeverse probably works.

Believe me, Craig. I'm the same way. Forget the filecard (or movie or comic stuff) and do what you want with them. Which is why my Sand Vipers (when i had them) were in powered suits and had cool optical stuff akin to a Predator's. I always liked the Swamp Rats, wish I really built them but alas, cash was a problem and I chose Razor Troopers. But my Razor Troopers are genetically enhanced but not so much like a tiger, y'know?

i havent spoken on this yet, so i guess i will. i can see why hasbo did this, it is something special for those(not myself) who buy them and put them on a shelf without opening them. these are great for those people because of the packaging. i will but a few bats because of the head and maybe a beach head.
as for new characters, we dont need them. dont get me wrong, i dont want to see another version of snake eyes, duke, cobra commander and the rest. but we do need new versions of greats we never got. a updated version of darklon with normal colors, a new muskrat, the twins in suits, zandar, dusty, crazy legs, rampart, the list goes on and on. we already have so many different characters that no one here has used them all, even if you just take pics you havent fit them all in. but enough of the repaints, give me some characters we havent saw in awhile. a character who only has 1 or 2 versions and hasnt been around since 1990.

Look, I'm not dissing your opinion, but I have to disagree. We definitely do need new characters. All of the "greats" were new characters at one time. Can you imagine if we still only had the original 1982 characters, with twenty-odd repaints of each? B-o-r-i-n-g. And as for no-one using every character, believe me, that's something I'm working towards. :)

As Rich and I both believe, new characters are great ONLY if Hasbro can design them well and EXECUTE them well.
What good is a 'new' character when they get gorilla arms, no articulation or a horrible sculpt?
Character is NOT good enough. The real model of them has to be just as good or better. Blackout. Great idea. Decent enough design (too many metal components). Horrible execution (gorilla arms, goofy look on his face, etc). Therefore, waste of plastic, resources and time. Do it right the first time! (but then, how do you get repeat customers if it's done right? Car industry? Always new stuff for the new models! :p )

Oh I couldn't agree more, G. Some are definitely better than others, and I won't buy a rubbish figure just because it's a new character. They have to be well done. But infinite repaints of a core group of so-called favourites? No thanks. That's one of the reasons I have no interest in the 25th line; I already have all these characters!!

I just wanted to clarify my stance on some things..
1. Yes Graham I totally agree with you on the new character Idea. If they do new characters put the heart and soul into it, it's exactly like you said, they start out well enough in thought process but the execution ends up being lousy.
2. I dont completely hate the 25th concept or infact hate the series. It may come across like I hate them, but i guess it's frustration because of how things have turned out with the releases.
3. I think the 25th series releases are a good idea by H, just poorly executed. Man.. i'm looking back on this page do you see a pattern emerging with hasbro?
I can't understand how a big toy company could get something so blatantly wrong, especially when Master Collector can get most of their stuff right.
