for those who have done dios, are going to do dios, or just love to read them, how do you feel about killing off characters in dios or fan fiction? to me its cool to see this in others dios, general hawk has killed many, many joes and cobras, actually to many. i have bought many obscure figures through ebay just to have some cannon fodder. every time i think of killing them, i think to myself, i may need these guys in the future. as of yet i havent killed off anyone and im deciding if i will.

When I do dios, they aren't all related. They can be one shot dio. So there is no big problem. Once in a while it is cool to kill a character. I did it to Scarlett.

To me anyone can die at any time. That does not mean they will not be back again tomorrow.

I'm not a fan of too much gratutitous death in any storylines to begin with, but when I feel it must be done, I have certain rules I try to follow.

Not just in dios, but in anything I write, I'm very careful with who gets killed off. I have to honestly ask myself if I've done everything I can with them... Because if I haven't, I'll regret having killed them later when I come up with a great idea I could have used for them.

Of course, sometimes when you're writing, the story leads to a point where you may have to kill someone off, whether you like it or not. In situations like that, I always try to give myself some sort of an "out" so that the character can be brought back later if necessary.

As for my feelings on other writers killing characters-- I say, if they think it's a good idea for their story, who am I to judge? I may not like it, but I have to believe that they're doing it for a reason.

My dios are all part of the same universe so if I kill someone off, it'll last forever unless it's, I dunno, Cobra where they do cloning stuff. But even then... I'd rather do something different in terms of 'killing'. My 1st dio, I killed off a LOT of characters. Torpedo, Big Ben, Rampage, just figures I didn't care for much. BUT I consider Transformations the beginning of where my stories are consistent.

I'm also weird enough that, if I kill off Scarlett or something like that, her twin sister or lil sister would join up and take over. *shrug*

im the same. even if there are other stories that dont directly tie in(night before christmas) it is still part of my joeverse and if someone dies, their dead. unless as you said, cloning or something brings them back.

true, true. his dios are what got me to both join this site and wanting to do my own. i still look everyday at his page to see if a new one is up and im almost through reading his fan fic, but he has killed off to many girls. lady jaye, the baroness, scarlett is pregnant and recently zarana. that is why i asked this question, to see what everyone thought. as i said i want to kill a few off whom i have no use for, to make it realistic, but im afraid ill regret it later. i could never kill off a girl, never.

I make no judgements about other writers now or ever. I have two major characters who will be KILLED in the first few pages of my ever waiting to be completed upcoming dio. My reason is to create a distinctive change in my joeverse that will have effects on everyone in the story.

I have the same problem with killing off a character. No sooner do I kill tham than I have a great idea for them in a story. But in this first story, I need to set a tone and you must admit, nothing sets a tone better than cold blooded murder.

Exactly! I've killed off plenty of characters in one-shots and mini-dios, only to use them again in later shots. However, if you want continuity between your shots or stories, it could be a problem.

As my Storyline goes on (I know, I need to get off my keister and finish my latest dio!) I had that issue. If no one dies, it's unrealistic. If you bring them back in some hokey way, it's unrealistic. If you let them die off, you're stuck with figures you can't use. What to do...what to do....

I figured it out. I keep their slot (known as a "billet" in the military) open. There is a Flash in My Joe stories. He's NOT Anthony Gambello. There is a MainFrame, but he's NOT Blaine Parker. When someone on the roster dies, they fill his slot and codename with a new person.

It's a little harder for Cobra. But they did switch out Fred and Cobra Commander for the longets of time!

Not a bad idea, Frank. I rather like that.

But it's more accurate in my 'verse that I only use those that I feel have a position there. Link Talbot and Dr. Mindbender have no place there. I won't even acknowledge them. Screw 'em. BUT someone like Snake Eyes, I don't think I could kill him off for real. I can set up a situation where it looks like he sacrificed himself (ala Transformations), but I can't honestly do it. Same with Duke. I can't JUST kill him off unless I REALLY think about it.

Sure as FRAK, Lady Jaye ain't dead in my verse. QUick Kick? Ain't no recent toy of him, y'know?

I'm not opposed to killing someone off, but it's gotta last and have effects later on. If I kill off Torpedo, then in the future, there BETTER be a mission where the guys will say, "Man, I wish Torpedo was here. He was the best. He'd know what to do!"
