i know that a lot of you say that your world is based mainly on the comics. those who say that also go by the filecards. im wondering in your joe world is life line a pacifist? in the cartoon he was, in the comic he was, but in his filecards he talks about fighting and they talk about his weapons. i dont think hasbro made him to be a pacifist, otherwise he would not have had a gun. doc was the pacifist. also wondering if anyone has ever noticed that gung ho has outranked duke a few years. in 92 he became 0-9 or sergeant major, duke was still 0-8 or master sergeant. duke never made it to 0-9 until 97 while gung ho maintained his rank until 97. also has anyone noticed that all fighter pilots have a rank of at least w-4 or warrant officer, and most of the new member after 97 all had higher ranks then the old joes. just some food for thought as i spent all day yesterday looking through every file card and making the correct way the ranks would really be, ill post the results later.

I like the file cards since they give the figures personality rather then them just being molded plastic. As far as whether they influence my Joe world, well I don't have a Joe world per say. I pretty much just collect and display (and take and post occasional pics). I don't do dio stories and probably never will so I have never imagined a world for my Joes.

I mostly go by the Filecards-and yes-my Lifeline carries the pistol he came with.I know Gung-Ho ranks Duke, but remember-in my Joeverse Hawk says"Duke answers to ME and Me alone",rather like Colonel Moore and Sgt.Major Plumley in We Were Soldiers.

Flint and the other officers 'rank' Duke, but my Duke has the respect of the entire Team-and he calls the officers "sir" even when giving them orders.

Also-regardless of Filecard rank,my Joes establish a different Chain-of-Command for each mission-for example-if Flint,Dusty, and Ace were on a mission in the desert-perhaps to capture a Cobra Prototype Aircraft-Flint leads, but Dusty is in charge of safety and survival in the Desert, and Ace is in charge once they get in the air. :)

Good thread,lehsreh! :)

Back in the old day, the filecards were EVERYTHING to me. It established what the characters did and stuff. The cartoon portrayals, for the most part, weren't my cup of tea. The Marvel comic was so-so. The DD Comic, 90% didn't float for me. And the movies? NOPE. Therefore, there is no Cobra-LA.

I do, however, reference the cartoon stuff but my world is much more modern/slightly futuristic sc i-fi. The cloning, monster creations, failed experiments, etc. Like you guys know that movies like Aliens, Doom, Predator, and even Star Wars and Star Trek have more influence than the comics and cartoon combined.

As for Lifeline, until I get a good figure of him, he really doesn't exist. Or he retired or whatever. I usually have it so that ALL Joes have basic medical knowledge. They can splint a broken bone, put in IVs, etc. I don't need a special character that says "I AM THE DOCTOR!!!" Ain't no real doctor in Doom, y'know? :p

As for ranking... Colton and Hawk are on equal footing which leads them to butting heads quite a bit. Duke is the field commander who ALWAYS seems to be injured or out of the picture. lol. Major Barrage, Lt. Graydon (my custom) and Flint are usually the field officers. FALCON would play a HUGE role if Hasbro would make him!!!

When I make up my squads, it is very specific that I would have some sort of leader. So in THE ISLAND, Graydon is top dog. Scarlet was next and then, Luke Ellison's char since he was the 'natural' leader for the Steel Brigade. At the same time, in that story, Graydon was supposed to be there as an observer and Scarlet was supposed to be testing the 3 Steel Brigade members. The Greenshirts in the dio were also under Luke. (forgot the guy's name)

But in Transformations/War For Territory... It was Graydon on top, then Stalker then Beach Head. If those 3 got knocked off, I don't really know who'd be top kick. The ranking is dependent on the story involved.

mmm, so you never even played with your joes when you were a kid???
i understand what you mean max, thats the way it is really in the joe world i think. even if people outrank duke, the joe system is highly flexible, thats the great thing about G.I. Joe. you can be anyone and still be a leader, i bascially just wanted to know for myself who was what and let any others who might want to know know.

Yes, as Flint stated, we read the filecards and do pull some things from it.....but on a whole, we started 25 years ago to switch things up........so filecards, cartoons, comics..........makes no real defining difference to us, we pick and choose!!

Of course I played with my Joes when I was a kid. But I just set them up and had battles or built cool forts out of cardboard and such. I didn't really imagine them so much talking and interacting with personalities. I guess I just didn't or don't have the imagination for it. Kinda why I like this site so much to see all of your imaginations at work.

The filecards are pretty important to me. When I first got into Joe collecting, the filecards were the only Joe story I had, as the cartoon didn't air here at that time, and I didn't know about the Marvel comic until later. But nothing is set in stone. Any aspects of the filecards or comic I didn't like, I just ignored. The cartoon, when I eventually did see it, had no influence on my Joeverse at all, as I prefer the realistic side of things rather than the fantasy side.

It's interesting to get everyone's "take" on subjects like this-I wish I had General Scarlett's and Flint's imaginations! :p I'm too "retentive" probably! :D

One other thing that might interest you guys-I made my younger brother change ALL his figure's Codenames because I had the REAL Joes. :p He did a good job-his Joes were a joint Navy SEAL/Marine Recon Team called WOLFPACK!

He made Torpedo his leader-"Lt.JG Sanderson",Duke became "The Gunny",Shipwreck was "Chief Wilson",and he gave Rock 'n Roll Breaker's Com gear and called him "Data"-this was years before Star Trek:TNG. :)

The filecards do play a pretty big role for me, especially with all the characters who got little to no comics exposure and therefore don't have another source to draw from in exploring their personalities. The Lifeline: pacifist thing is a good point, though -- v1 having that pistol totally went against his character unless he only uses it for warning shots or something... Remember, though, when looking at filecard descriptions of his character that the RAHC and Anti-Venom versions are actually a different guy...!

With the ranking I tend to ignore the filecards now since so many characters' grades have jumped all over the place, particularly the huge jumps in '97. I go by the setup the comics pretty much use too, which is the notion that the GI Joe team as a unit has its own command structure which doesn't have to strictly follow grades from the other branches of the military. I ultimately refer to the organisational chart from DDP's Battle Files, which suits my history of growing up with Action Force since Flint outranks Duke! :)

i dont follow them myself, ill probably promote a few and demote a few. i made the list today from the top all the way down to anyone who has been at least E-7, sergeant first class. ill post it tomorrow, there are a lot of surprises, at least to me. just a hint, hawk is outranked by colton, he outranks flagg, but there is someone else who outranks hawk. tomorrow, same bat time, same bat channel.

I have lots of filecards and full back cards. I like to read them, since they were interesting, but that didn't fully capture all of the activity these figures did.

I too had a quandry that Master Sergeant Hauser was bossing around officers, but I reconciled this as a team effort. Conrad liked bossing people around, got his orders from Hawk, who ranked higher than most of the operations folks. The operations folks were busy doing their job, and Duke was bossy, but they collected a bigger paycheck, so they just let him say his piece. At the end of the day, if Cobra was down, everyone was cool with it.

The one thing that I'm teaching my boys is the difference between the toy they are holding and the person holding the toy. We can have a great battle and we all win because we had fun playing. It doesn't matter if our vehicle and driver were destroyed or victorious, as long as we played well and didn't yell at one another (I don't yell, but they are 6 and 3, so that's a work in progress). The 6 year old still likes "his" forces to "win." I keep reminding them, this is all imagination, and it doesn't reflect on them as people what happens during a play adventure. The 3 year old doesn't care if you are playing with him, or he is playing by himself, he just has fun.

I strayed a bit from the topic again...

Not too long ago, we had a "dis the gi joe command structure" thread. ie; HATE DUKE!!!

Thing is, some of us did pipe in that we didn't like ANY of the command. Duke was too Aryian. Flint was too machismo. Falcon was portrayed as a tool. Hawk has become a wheel-chaired bound dork. Doesn't leave much in the end. Stalker? Incompetent. Major Barrage? "I have haird like that, just not on my head!" Gen. Colton? A nod to the past that shouldn't have been revisited.

Yet, in the end, I would choose Falcon as the man (c'mon, take away the movie and Falcon WAS the bomb) with Flint as 2nd place. Hawk has always been my main man, even if he sits behind a desk in my 'verse.
