Has anyone on here seen any Dio Stories with HUGE Battles?

Was it good or bad?

Do you think Large battles in Dio stories are cool or stupid?

How was it done? (IE: small parts of the larger battle or a free-for-all melee?)

What did you like about it?

What did you hate about it?

What would you like to see in a Major Dio Battle?

I ask this because I made a dio battle with about 35 figures and it was a PAIN, but I was thinking of taking a whole weekend soon and doing a MAJOR BATTLE..like 500+ figures! But I wanna see if it interests anyone or if it takes away from a Story. Cut and paste the above into a reply and let me know your thoughts!

i liked it myself, it really didnt take away from any of the characters. it actually focused on a few and gave a lil spotlight to some others, i thought it was done very well. and i think its a good idea, ill never have a big battle in my dios just because i dont have the resources. but its more realistic, i mean if you have two armies, there not gonna be 20 vs 20 all the times. general hawk also did a good one where the joes did an attack on the terror drom to free hit and run.

Yup. Tim's one, as linked by lehsreh, and General Hawk has done some fairly large battles. I'm especially thinking of his recent one with the Dreadnok compound. Also, Sonneilon looks to be heading to something pretty major, and we've seen the aftermath of a large battle with his mountains of Cobra corpses!

Was it good or bad?

I enjoyed them!

Depends on whether or not there's a decent story to go with it, so the big battle scene has big emotional impact. Also the larger the "set," the larger the chance of some real world-scale stuff getting in there unless you're REALLY careful or really patient with fixing things "in post."

How was it done? (IE: small parts of the larger battle or a free-for-all melee?)

What I've seen has tended to have a few shots & set-pieces of the overall battle then focus on smaller aspects of it to allow characters to play a part alongside the events.

What did you like about it?

More chance of seeing favourite characters in action, and there's of course the sheer spectacle of it. I prefer the assault on the second Death Star because there's more going on. And the Cobra Island Civil War was one of my favourite stories in the comic. Plus it's a chance to be impressed by the dedication of a dio-crafter!

What did you hate about it?

Can be hard to tell what's going on, and can sometimes be a tendency to take too long showing fighting instead of progressing the story.

What would you like to see in a Major Dio Battle?

Strategy/tactics, battlefield-overview shots every so often, short looks at elements of the battle that give a sense of what's going on and some characterisation without spending too long on individual events unless they're key to the overall plot. Most of all, story & story progression to put it all in context.

If you do this, I will DEFINITELY be in full support and would love to see it. I hope to do something like it myself someday (been working up to it with my Ninja War stuff and standing all my Cobras on the table...) but with your immense resources for "cast" & "extras" it could be something truly spectacular! The LOTR of JoeDios...! :)

Ok, let me ask you this....in a HUGE battle, how would you send in Cobra troops if you were Cobra Commander? What would your order of battle be? For example, I'd have;

1st Wave Blue shirts and hiss tanks...softening up and fodder to test the defenses. Fangs as air support and Maggot Arty support

2nd Wave Vipers, hiss Tanks, Rattlers and heavy vipers (Frag, Heat and SAW vipers) (if in a special environment, specialist vipers would go in with this wave like snow serpents in the arctic, Jungle vipers for jungles, Range vipers for wooded areas, etc)

3rd wave Knock out punch Neo Vipers Ring necks, battle hornets, killing strong points

4th Wave Claws (they are my super heavy weapons specialists!) steam roller the left overs!

5th wave....this battle is unwinnable so send in V-troops (Especially the Razor troopers!), kill anything left!

6th wave BATS Evacuate!!! They will keep anything alive running around chasing it's tail while we get the commander out of town!

Or, should I send in the Bats and V-troops first? Just to "muddy up" the place first?

well you know more then me about any military strategy, but i think they would send the bats in first, use head cams to access the enemy, even if in your joe verse CC is stupid like the toons, which he isnt in mine. then his advisers would tell about the bats. but thats just me, it seems like the smart thing to do to see what the enemy has. maybe send half the bats and keep half in reserve.

Yours with the Russians (Big Bens) being attacked by Iron Grenadiers (Dreadnoks).

Was it good or bad?

It was cool. Some murder at cold blood!!!

Do you think Large battles in Dio stories are cool or stupid?

If you have a large force they can be really good. Look at Braveheart, The Last Samurai, Kill Bill V1, etc...

How was it done? (IE: small parts of the larger battle or a free-for-all melee?)

You know the answear here :D .

What did you like about it?

I like it.

What did you hate about it?

Nothing if there is a why behind.

What would you like to see in a Major Dio Battle?

Mans/machines getting face to face fighting at melee style.

Can I ask a simple question?

Why do you ask when you know you love it and are most likely going to do it anyway???

I'm not trying to be a smart@$$, I'm just stating a point of fact................

Who gives a flying fig what anybody else thinks?? You know what you like, so do it!!!

Personally, I can't wait to see what you come up with!!

Go for it!!!!

He's probably looking for what NOT to do. In other words, he shouldn't use my 1st dio as a basis. :P

Yeah, a few...I guess...I'm mostly bored with dio stories because they seem to be the same old stuff over and over. Until today I hadn't given Tim' Francovich's site a look in many months. I got tired of dead-serious and/or "continuing where the comic book left-off" storylines. Heck, I even got tired of the more creative "from the beginning" approach that I guess started with WARFARE, where fans do a RELOADED style story.

Back to big battles, I like chaosdjinn's battle dio...which wasn't a story...but doesn't every picture tell a story?

Was it good or bad?

I can't recall any bad ones, except maybe distracting in setting...obvious living room or basement...but setting a lot of stuff up outside is time consuming, plus the elements are a hazard.

Do you think Large battles in Dio stories are cool or stupid?

Stupid cool! Actually, I couldn't think of any reason to call them stupid.

How was it done? (IE: small parts of the larger battle or a free-for-all melee?)

I'm all for free-for-all melees...too many deathmatch games.

What did you like about it?

Lots of characters in action...the standard response. ;)

What did you hate about it?

Dio story battles, big or small, like many in movies, t.v. comics, etc., are too often one-sided. The Joes own the Cobras or whatever. Also, vehicles are used somewhat statically. Air cover seems non-existent...but air cover is hard to pull of.

What would you like to see in a Major Dio Battle?

I don't...other than recreating cartoon scenes and comic book moments. (which oddly, no one seems to do.)

Storywise...I wouldn't mind seeing...

Serpentor win....seriously...fans treat this amalgam of history's greatest military minds as a whipping boy. While visually quite impressive, I'm not even sure what the point of Resurrection was storywise, bring him back then off 'em in a similar manner to the first time. Likewise, Devil's Due went and did something similar to that. Basically since Cobra Commander cannot win against GI JOE, his only victories can be defeating would-be-usurpers.

Next up, Destro lose. Destro is made the good-bad guy and often comes out a winner. Noble types often get their butts handed to them in real life. I think Destro lost once in the comic, when his castle was destroyed.

So I guess a dio where Serpentor kicks Destro's @$$ in a big battle. I don't have enough space or IG's (or editing software or talent) to do that myself.

I'm not sure what Sonnelion is referring to as being bad. I recall one of his story having BATS attack and it was cool because greenshirts got wasted. Was that the battle?

That actually sounds like a really good idea for a story, Lava Boss! Destro vs. Serpentor would be very cool. I don't recall the two of them ever fighting each other in anything before...

Oh, and I agree with you about people bringing Serpentor back for no reason. He may be outlandish, but he's a pretty cool character. I'd love to see someone do more with him.
